Moving Packing Supplies: Packing the Right Way

Packing for your move takes a lot of time and effort to make sure that it is done right, especially if you are doing it on your own. Even if you have contracted a moving company for your move, you can still save some money by packing some things on your own, instead of letting the professional movers do everything for you. The right moving packing supplies can help you pack properly.

Doing the Packing Yourself

If you have decided to do some or all of the packing on your own, you have to make sure that you are done and all set to load once the moving van or truck arrives. To be on the safe side, everything should be ready as early as the night before the day of the actual move. This way, all that will be left for you to pack the following morning are the things you need for the night, the morning after, and immediately after arriving at your new home.

Before leaving your old home, the movers will inspect the boxes and make sure that the items are properly packed. Otherwise, they may not allow the boxes to be loaded unless repacking is done. Thus, you must have your moving packing supplies within reach.

Usually, stuff from the attic, garage, and other similar storage places – such as sentimental items and holiday decorations – are found to be in need of repacking. This is because these items are generally lumped together in ripped, torn, and/or soiled boxes, or boxes that don’t seal or close properly. Use new boxes for these stuff instead. Likewise, if the contents rattle when the box is shaken, insulate the contents to make the box more stable.

Things to Pack

There is no way you can put everything in boxes by yourself. Major appliances and furniture, for example, must be padded and wrapped by a professional mover for safety reasons. Also, items that need to be disassembled or crated like large table tops, chandeliers or slate pool tables must be handled by the pros, unless you are a pro, of course. Professional movers have the right moving packing supplies for the job.

Moving Box Basics

The best way to ensure that your belongings will arrive at your destination safely and intact is to use high quality, new moving packing supplies and materials. Moving boxes are available in various shapes and sizes that can accommodate a wide range of household items. On the other hand, you can use barrels to load many odd-shaped stuff into a single big container.

Wrapping Tips

Before placing the items in boxes, you may need to wrap many of them to prevent breakage and scratching. You can use foam peanuts, bubble pack, tissue paper, and other moving packing supplies for the purpose. Many experienced movers, however, prefer using clean and unprinted newsprint.

When wrapping, begin by laying down a small paper stack on an uncluttered, flat countertop or table. To wrap jars and round glasses, roll each one on 2 or 3 sheets of paper, making sure to start from one corner of the paper and folding the sides inwards as you go. Use the same technique for odd-shaped and big items. Place the items in the middle and gather the corners. Use more paper, if necessary. Once the corners are together, put some tape to secure the wrap.

Before placing items inside the boxes, pad the bottom with a couple of inches of wadded sheets of paper. Put larger and heavier pieces at the bottom of the box before gently placing the more fragile and lighter items on top.

Books, plates, and other items that come in similar shapes must be packed vertically. This way, the items will be able to maximize their inherent structural strength. Avoid overloading the boxes. To be on the safe side always, fill them only up to a weight you can easily manage. Fill up the void, topped off with wadded paper. Finally, secure the box by taping to prevent it from shifting while in transit.
